Run a simulation

Once you have configured your case by adding bases, logistics, and personnel, and defining your strategy, you’re ready to run a simulation. Simulations use the inputs you provide to calculate output metrics such as campaign duration, logistics utilization, and average task duration.

  1. Open a Shoreline Design case.
  2. Click on the Simulate tab.
  3. Choose your simulation settings.
  4. Click Run simulation.

Simulation settings

SettingDescription
WeatherHow the weather data you have added to your case is used across simulation runs.

Learn more about the four options on our Weather page.
Start yearNote: O&M only.

The year from which operations will begin in the simulation.
Start dateNote: Construction only.

The date from which the construction campaign will begin in the simulation. This is the date on which the first task is carried out.
YearsNote: O&M only.

How many years you want your O&M schedule to run.
RunsHow many simulations you want to run using the same settings. Simulation runs are run as a batch and used to calculate percentiles.

See the How many simulation runs should I use? section below for more details.
Days off per yearNumber of days a personnel member is not available for work per year.
Maximum rotation cycleMaximum rotation of days on and off work.

O&M

The complexity of the simulated events can affect the number of runs required. More complex cases (such as those with MCRs) may require more runs to achieve convergence.

If you are unsure how many runs you require, it is best to start with a moderate number (~100 runs) and increase the number gradually until you observe convergence.

Construction

From a statistical point of view, we find that simulations converge around the 50-run mark. We recommend you limit runs to 50 per simulation. This will reduce wait time and provide reliable outputs.
